In KZN, Lihle took part in a SAPS-sponsored gun destruction exercise. A total of 6243 firearms were destroyed. These were crushed into small, unusable pieces, and then they're recycled. Lihle has made a passionate contribution to peace in the province. The Witness newspaper has written a profile of her.

The Gun Free Zone (GFZ) project official launch took place in Lesotho. So far over 30 GFZs have been declared across the four partner countries - Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia and South Africa.

We took part in the launch of the Patrollers Programme in Sebokeng. This project is run by the Take Charge campaign, which derives from the Gauteng Department for Community Safety.

Gun Free in Cape Town held its annual meeting on 25th July. Members of the advisory committee and project partners from several areas attended.

 

 


 Events: September 2007



Western Cape

On the 30 August 2007 until 21 September 2007 Lewina and Thembani including a team of trainers facilitated aseries of workshop in Ravensmead High School.

The workshop was attended by the educators,learners including community stakeholder with the purpose of developing Firearm Free Zone policy.

Thembani and Agnes cintinues to facilitate workshops and also monitoring the progress of the project partners who were trained on the Firearm Control Act.


Upcoming events

Thembani will be organizing the training on the Firearm Control Act in place called Harare, the event will be attended by the new project area's that are involved in crime prevention.


Gauteng office

On the 03-07 September 2007 Mike  hosted the interns and teachers and leaners around the province including the funder's  called Butterfly Works from Netherland .
The purpose of the gathering was to introduce and train the participant about the comic strip programme that will be used as means of communication bettween South African learner and Netherlands learners.
This is seen by the two partners(South Africa and Netherlands) as a reversed development between developed countries and the developing countries.

Gun Free South Africa and Greater Good South Africa met to plan an event of Toy gun campaign which is schedule to take place in Diepkloof, Soweto on the 19 October 2007 the venue is still to be finalised by the Gun Free office.


Comunity Empowerment Project

Vincent continues to visit all trained project partners in order to assist them as they monitor the implementation of the Firearm Control Act. The most crucial area that was visited this month is Reiger Park community as they are experiencing gangster violence around the area.


Upcoming Events
