 The Gun Control Alliance

History of GCA

The GCA is a network of organisations and individuals calling for the stricter control of firearms in South Africa. Diverse organisations support the Charter for Gun Control, including business, health, religious, women and youth organisations. These include: Business Against Crime, Black Sash, Child Accident Prevention Foundation of South Africa, Disabled People of South Africa, The Human Rights Committee, Human Rights Institute of South Africa, People Opposing Women Abuse, Quaker Peace Centre, South African Association of Youth Clubs, South African NGO Coalition, South African Society of Physiotherapy and Red Cross Children’s Hospital.

Influential individuals who have signed the charter include:

  • George Bizos
  • Judge Edwin Cameron
  • Rhoda Kadalie
  • Mayor Danny Kekana
  • Helen Suzman
  • Archbishops Ndungane and Tutu.

Mission of GCA

The Gun Control Alliance is committed to enhancing public safety by reducing the number of guns in society through stricter gun control. It consists of a diverse number of organisations and individuals who have endorsed the Charter for Gun Control. The Charter for Gun Control recognises that the current Arms and Ammunition Act is outdated and fails to adequately screen firearm license applicants, or monitor existing gun owners. As such, it identifies certain minimum demands to be included in an entirely new Firearms Control Act. It allows the unarmed majority of South Africans to raise their voices in support of stricter gun control.
