Gun ownership is not a right in South Africa. It is a privilege granted by the state and is strictly controlled by the FCA. The FCA is a comprehensive gun control law designed to: Protect people’s constitutional rights to life and freedom from harm (or “bodily integrity”) Prevent crime by Stopping the flow of legal guns into the pool of illegal guns Removing illegal guns from society Improving control over legal guns Give the state powers to remove illegal guns; control the sale, use and storage of legal guns; detect and punish careless or criminal use of firearms. The government is very serious about gun control because the level of gun violence in South Africa is so high.
